The same thing goes with most other units, giving bonuses or getting various boosts based on their position on the map: the cyclops shoot in a straight line, so you need them where the most enemies pile up, for example. Take the Monks for example: when you unlock their first regular skill, they give High Morale to all units in front of them – so it makes sense to place them last in a long row.
